ABOUT
My name is Charmian and I am a lover of art and have felt driven to paint since I was very young. Living in Sydney I am drawn to the beaches but equally love the bush, recently working on images of the Australian landscape with references to time, mystery and reverence.
I love to work very fast, often outside in the elements, sometimes completing a painting in one session. My particular love is to almost draw with paint, having a spontaneity of stroke and line - capturing the elements of the subject, getting lost in the moment.
When starting a painting I am looking to find the iconography of the particular environment; the patterns and shapes with colour directing. My recent landscapes do not reference a particular place but rather a particular feeling or a recognition.
Influenced by all the wonderful artists that we all take into our subconscious, especially the impressionists and fauves, I am working on my own style. Now, having a good understanding of acrylic, oil and watercolour techniques I am feeling free to be creative, trying to do something new.
I studied a BA in Mass Communication early on and have found that communicating with paint gives me most joy. Lately I have had the opportunity to paint and devote time to my art, participating in many groups shows. I enjoy continuously learning by doing!
